Who likes giving money away? Yeah, no hands in the air on that one.
When it comes to running a fundraiser, there are dozens of challenges. First and foremost: What cause is truly worthy of my pocket change?—that is, my Hot Pockets fund, and no one, I mean NO ONE, comes between me and my Hot Pockets!
So what is MLBA and why give up my Hot Pockets for it? “Making Lives Better with Alorica” is a charity run by Alorica employees for Alorica employees. The program helps families in dire financial need. Here are my Top 5 reasons why MLBA is way better than a delicious pizza tucked inside a pastry sleeping bag:
Reason Number 5: Fundraising Efficiency
There is always overhead, but since MLBA is run by existing Alorica employees who trade in their Facebook-scrolling time for charity-administration time, administrative costs are significantly lower than other household-name charities.
Reason Number 4: Don’t Hassle me, I’m Local!
While many national charities ship the entirety of their donations off to a national branch, never to be heard from again, almost all of the MLBA funds raised locally stay local. To top it off, national MLBA funds are also used to help extreme cases across the company, meaning we have access to more than 100% of the funds we raise locally!
Reason Number 3: Direct Impact
We already discussed the funds staying local, but with MLBA, you’re not just helping someone in Omaha, you’re usually helping a fellow employee! Joe, Tom, Tina, that guy I don’t know with the funny-looking beard always munching a Zagnut bar (seriously, where do you even find those anymore?)—we help the people you know! It’s our community. Our family. We can donate knowing we’re helping one of our own when they need it the most.
Reason Number 2: Employee Engagement
Proper fundraising takes people. Sure, some have tried monkeys, but they don’t have the discipline, and robots are too cost prohibitive, so we’re back to people. People put forth the time and effort to organize and run an event—Crazy people who are willing to wear a silly hat, take a pie to the face, or shave their head! Engaging employees directly creates more of an internal community as well as gets us involved in the community outside our doors.
Reason Number 1: Putting the “Fun” in Fundraising!
Helping others is reward enough. No need for thanks, applause, kudos, or cool bonus stuff … Unless you have some cool bonus stuff … Do you? Seriously, because I really like cool bonus stuff!
What kind of cool bonus stuff? Stuff like raffle prizes, or Dress Down Passes, or general workplace hijinks. All of it can be a benefit to morale, workplace community, and even productivity, if the fundraiser is run properly! Raising money and morale simultaneously is a win-win for all!
So when you see an email or a poster promoting MLBA, know that it’s definitely worth your pocket change! Help often and have fun!
